Into Thy Hands


Oor Theatre (Scotland)

1561. Scotland. Returning from France to rule her country, Queen Mary is faced with hostility from the Protestant lords. Seen as more French than Scottish, she has much to overcome as Queen, especially as a Catholic woman. The lords choose Henry Darnley for her husband, but as the marriage frays both Mary and Darnley find respite in Italian secretary David Rizzio. Flitting between comedy and tragedy, Into Thy Hands explores the bond between the Queen, her husband and lover. This tale examines homophobia and relationships, and questions: Who decides our fate?

    An old book, What It Means to Be a Woman, given to Georgia on her sixteenth birthday, becomes the thread connecting three women’s lives: Georgia, now a woman in an unhappy marriage to a brutish man; Shirley, her long-lost best friend, now a nightclub singer in New York; and Maud, Georgia’s mother, the orchestrator of their downfall.     A bold, witty and moving autobiographical solo performance exploring queer identity, diaspora, racial injustice and the search for belonging. Krishna, a queer Indian-Malaysian man, attends a gay speed-dating event in Berlin. Through five-minute conversations, his regret and grief at never coming out to his late mother emerge. With raw storytelling, multimedia projection and poetic honesty, the piece weaves together personal memories, political insight and humour to challenge dominant narratives and celebrate the voices of the marginalised.
