    An old book, What It Means to Be a Woman, given to Georgia on her sixteenth birthday, becomes the thread connecting three women’s lives: Georgia, now a woman in an unhappy marriage to a brutish man; Shirley, her long-lost best friend, now a nightclub singer in New York; and Maud, Georgia’s mother, the orchestrator of their downfall.
