The Story of the Stone


The Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre with WanQuanZhunBei (China)

A contemporary Kunqu opera adaptation of the Chinese classic Dream of the Red Chamber. Jia Baoyu, once a sentient stone, is reborn and guided by Buddhist and Daoist forces to realise the world is empty of permanent identity and intrinsic independence. Wang Pushi, a fourth-generation actor of the Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre, mirrors this awakening through his performance, discovering a generative and empowering transcendence of emptiness. A dynamic fusion of classic Kunqu with modern experimental theatre, immersive media and slow rock music. Performed in Mandarin and English, with English surtitles.

    Echoes

    This compelling new music theatre piece, inspired by the Wei-Jin era’s Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, reimagines the legendary final moments of Ji Kang. Before his execution in 263 CE, he played the guqin, a traditional Chinese musical instrument. In Echoes, this zither becomes a spiritual vessel, through which his companions confront grief, freedom and existential meaning. Blending music, drama and physical theatre, the narrative intertwines metaphysical dialogue with poetic defiance, mirroring the struggle of the sages to reconcile idealism with a chaotic world.     The Life of Mine

    I’m a framer who has been trying to be a good person all my life, but as a result, my wife betrayed me, my son died, and I switched to the police force to survive… In a production that celebrates Bejing's cultural heritage, Lao She's 1950s novella is performed in traditional Bejing musical style by a Chinese troupe famous for interpreting his work. The story takes the perspective of a common man who, despite his personal struggles of loss and pain, continues to find love for the world.     Peanut Adventure

    This whimsical allegorical fairytale from China is about the world of food. It follows a peanut’s fantastical journey to avoid its destiny of being eaten, and so reflects the universal human experience of struggling against fate. Through its adventures in the Delicious Metropolis (the restaurant kitchen), the Food Refugee Camp (the leftover bowl), and the Flavourless Hell (the garbage can), the peanut meets a colourful cast of condiments!     The Twenty-four Solar Terms

    When the goddess Nüwa creates the world, her twin children, Day and Night become imbalanced. Seduced by this chaos, the Night Demon disrupts the natural order, plunging the world into darkness and disarray. The spirits of the twenty-four Solar Terms awaken and join forces with the four divine beasts of Eastern mythology, restoring harmony between heaven and earth, humanity and nature. Pupils from Jingdong Primary School in Shanghai depict the twenty-four natural spirits marking the different seasons from the unique Chinese system, in this visual and auditory feast.
